While I was doing research before I put up the "sonic" cat repellant, I saw that some folks have had success with putting coffee grounds in areas that they were having problems with cat/dogs. I did collect some and spread it around the veggie garden along with the sonic repellants that I put up. Figure it wouldn't hurt to throw out the grounds as its good fertilizer (in moderation I hear)

I really feel that enthusiasm and desire (like yours) are the only real tools you need to create and enjoy a home garden. I too love the square foot approach to growing vegetables and have practiced this approach for years. Just keep up what your doing and I'll check out your progress as we go through the season. I understand from your article that you are located somewhere close to Oregon. If so, that a great place to grow all sorts of crops. Good luck and I hope you have a fine harvest.

Hi Jonathan - I have not been keeping up with my garden blog - as you can see. Overall, I was very pleased with the sqarefoot garden... although some plants did seem stunted. This was my first year doing a square foot garden -- and I am excited to start in on the garden again in late Feb. Plants that did good: carrots, lettuce, eggplant, radishes, strawberries, tomatoes, potatoes. Plants that did not do well: onions - turned out small; zucchini - I gave it plenty of room I thought, peas - I love peas but they did not produce well; bush beans - forget it; beets - no way did they want to grow. I have already started pouring over seed catalogs and planning out what to plant first when the weather warms a bit. I over wintered the garden with crimson clover and rye grass -- the rye grass has held up really well and this is what I will use for overwintering/green manure for next winter. I also plan to add some compost to the soil in late feb. and experiment more with soil amendments. Happy gardening!
