Maui > Day Four > Volcano!

by Rainbow Bobbins

Up at 1:00am to drive to Haiku to pick up bikes and head up to the top Haleakala to watch the sun rise. It was cold when we arrived and a sliver of moon was glowing – it warmed as the sun rose – stunning.

Here she comes. I love that ol ball of flame

Me and Liz - so romantic. Ha!

Glows

Silversword - unique to Haleakalā called Ahinahina in Hawaiian

After watching La rise we drove back down to about 7000ft and rode our bikes the rest of the way down. Along the way we stopped on grassy patches to look out over Maui. We stopped in Kula at the Sunrise Protea Farm to tour their grounds and grab a coffee. In Makawao we stopped at Rodeo General Store for some damn good food. Kale salad, vegan mac salad, fresh greens. Sweet little town.

We descended the rest of the way down the volcano and dropped our bikes off in Haiku. You could do the whole ride (about 22 miles) in under an hour if you haul ass but we stretched it out 4 hours +.  After the ride we checked out some local surf spots, cruised around Paia and ended the day with a float in Napili Bay.
